Secure data deletion feature (new and refurbished equioment)

A feature for secure data deletion shall be available for deleting user data in all data storage units present in the product¹ (see explanatory note below). Instructions for using this feature and information about the standard(s) used for secure data deletion shall be provided in the user manual or similar and/or via a link to the manufacturer's website.  

¹A secure data deletion feature can be made available by

• pre-install it on/in the product before it is delivered
• provide the software for download on the website free of charge
• providea secure remote removal service  free of charge upon request
• provide a secure on-site data deletion service free of charge upon request.

Upon request, the supplier shall be ready to present one of the following; for example:  

• Specifications of all features for data deletion included with the product. The NIST 800–88 Revision 1 guidelines for the level 'clear' or other equivalent guidelines can be used as a relevant reference for compliance. 

• Labelling that meets the requirement, such as valid certification in accordance with: 

• TCO Certified, generation 9, for desktops 

• TCO Certified, generation 9, for notebooks 

• TCO Certified, generation 9, for all-in-one PCs 

• TCO Certified, generation 9, for tablets 

• TCO Certified, generation 9, for smartphones
