Healthy chickens and turkeys are a key aspect for animal welfare, health and well-being, but also for climate impact. Important animal health indicators include foot health, preventive disease control (for example cleaning between batches of animals in the stable) and stocking density.

Criterion text
Documentation shall be available throughout the contract period for chicken and turkey raw material, showing that the raw material has been produced taking into account preventive health parameters for animal welfare that include as a minimum:
- Control of foot health and measures to minimise the occurrence of foot injuries.
- Stocking density of max. 36 kg/ m2 for chicken.
- A maximum stocking density of 40 kg/m2 for turkeys weighing less than 7 kg and 45 kg/m2 for turkeys weighing 7 kg or more.
- Procedures and measures according to control programmes that minimise Campylobacter and all salmonella serotypes when rearing the animals.
- Cleaning between batches of animals.
The health parameters shall be systematically monitored, causes such as foot injuries or infections shall be analysed, and deviations shall be documented and lead to appropriate action in consultation with a veterinarian or production advisor in order to remedy the problems.
Verification
The tenderer confirms in its tender that only raw material compliant with the contract conditions will be supplied.
During the contract period, the supplier shall be able to provide one of the following on request, for example:
- Valid licence/certificate of the following label/certification or equivalent certification
- Svensk Fågel
- Adherence to an established and well-documented health programme for the animal species in question, covering the health parameters in accordance with the requirement.
- Implementation of a separate animal welfare programme covering the above-mentioned points with preventive animal health care measures according to the stable record and medicinal product record.

This requirement can be followed up by carrying out a spot check. This can be done, for example, by checking one of the following:
Certification
If the requirement has been verified by means of a certification, follow-up is possible by checking that there is a valid certificate for the product. This is checked on the website of the relevant labelling organisation, such as Svensk Fågel.
Animal welfare programmes
If the requirement has been verified by means of an animal welfare programme, follow up by asking for one of the following, for example:
Certificate of compliance verified by an accredited verification body.
Annual report of the affiliated veterinary surgeon (control programme).
Audit report or stable record, medicinal product record in accordance with the requirement.
Motive
Healthy animals mean better animal welfare, while also resulting in more efficient production. Healthy animals grow well and produce more, thereby reducing environmental impact, including climate impact per kilogram of meat produced.
